Gun.
There is a word that will get your attention.
Perhaps you are a hunter, or maybe you are anti-gun. Maybe you grew up in a house that had firearms, or maybe you have never seen a gun in real life. No matter where you fall on the continuum, the word “gun” makes everyone feel something.
At the most basic level, the reason for this is that guns do something that cannot be undone. The act of pulling the trigger of a gun is consequential. You cannot get the bullet back and it goes exactly where you pointed but maybe not where you intended. Pulling a trigger takes a fraction of a second and the result is permanent. It almost makes the point of the carpenter’s motto of “measure twice, cut once” laughable when compared to the finality of firing a gun. This is why it is so important to aim carefully, with intention, and a full understanding of consequence.
2020 has been described as a dumpster fire, train wreck, etc. For many people it was massively challenging and as a result, culturally, there is a lot of pent up hope that 2021 will bring more joy. Based upon our survey results, approximately two thirds of candidates and companies are optimistic about 2021. We, at Hunter Crown, are too!
With optimism may come the decision to consider a new opportunity or change companies. Making a career move is a big deal and it deserves careful consideration. Think about what you are aiming at and looking to achieve. Take a breath before you pull the trigger. Are you moving away from something or towards something? Besides a new name on your business card, will the move add new skills to your resume? What does the culture look and feel like and is it consistent with an environment that you feel you can thrive within? How is the business managed and what is the financial health of the organization? Is management investing in the team or focused on taking cost out to grow EBITDA?
There are many questions that you should look to answer before you pull the trigger and make a move. Treat the decision as consequential. We live in an ever changing and dynamic world. Certainly, no one will stay in the same role forever but making a move for movement’s sake sounds dangerous.
Make 2021 great by making decisions backed by thoughtful intention. Take the time to breathe. Visualize your goals. Life is precious. As Mr. Hamilton said, you will know when it is time to take your “shot.”
