Van Gogh Was My Teacher

As we approach fall in the United States, it feels like it is time to get ready to “go back to school”. Time to get back into a routine, outline goals, and sharpen the mind to learn. I love this feeling and transition. I hope that you do as well. I had already started working on a plan for this year but due to a recent experience with a world famous painter, I think the outcome might be a bit different.

This past week, I attended the Van Gogh Exhibition: Immersive Experience in DC. If you have had a chance to enjoy this exhibit, I hope that its mention brought a smile to your face. If you haven’t, I would highly recommend (here’s a link for more info:).

While touring the exhibit, a specific quote caught my attention:

“If you hear a voice within you say, ‘You cannot paint,’ then by all means, paint, and that voice will be silenced.”  -- Vincent Van Gogh

I loved this quote, perhaps because in the back of my mind I was contemplating “going back to school”, and this message inspired me to challenge myself to learn something new! I have truly appreciated the wisdom gained by experiencing but I am cognizant that it might come at the cost of being less willing to learn outside of my comfort zone. It is the sum of these two thoughts, “go back to school” and “I cannot paint, then paint!”, that is telling me that I need to learn something new and to overcome the fear of holding back. Just imagining what this could be…sorry…WILL BE, is exhilarating.

In a world where lots of things are outside of our control and bring stress and fear into our lives, a bit of focus on what you can control feels super. Couple that with self-improvement and actualization and you will start generating your own light to push back against the darkness.

As for what I will learn, I don’t know yet but I will let you know when I do. I would appreciate it if you would do the same. Have a wonderful day!
