News Years may be a couple of weeks away but if you change your way of thinking to it starting now, you have a better shot of making your commitments stick.
The reason is simple and synonymous to packing a bag the night before you travel or preparing your meals for the coming week. In each of these cases, because you have thought about taking action before an event occurs it allows you to be more mindful and in control of the outcome. If you wait till the last second to do anything, you magnify the risk that some unknown event will throw everything off and negatively impact the outcome you seek. So start thinking that the New Year starts today!
To plan for a better outcome in each area of your life, including professionally, think about what actions you can take to care for and improve yourself. Remember that in every action and interaction, you are in the denominator of all experience. It all starts and ends with you. If you improve you, you improve the chances of achieving the outcomes that you seek.
Take the time to put together a plan for each of the following three areas.
This does not have to be about creating an Olympic physique or a philosopher's mind. It is about being mindful of these three elements that substantially impact every aspect of your life each day.
Mind
Body
Soul
For your mind…
Consider making time near the beginning of each day to stop the stimulation barrage so that your original thoughts have time to come into your consciousness. This is not about meditation or adding something to your day... it is actually is about taking something away. Try taking away all stimulation for a few minutes... no phone, tv, magazine, etc. Let your mind share with you what is important.
For your body…
Consider adding some mobility or stretching exercises to your daily routine. Five minutes a day can change your life. Many of us suffer from poor mobility and flexibility due to our sedentary lifestyle and careers that require repetitive movements. Adding a little movement and stretching will reduce injuries, give you an energy bump, and also build your confidence to do more exercises in the future. Set yourself up to win!
For your soul…
Take some time to really connect with your being and its relation to the universe. There is a famous Zen koan about a man racing, at breakneck speed, on a horse through a village. A villager runs up to him and yells, “Where are you going?”, and the man replies, “I don’t know, ask the horse!” The horse represents your habits and routine. This programmed autopilot carries us through most days. Take the time to reacquaint yourself with you, where you are, and where you want to go. Give yourself the space to breathe and remember that you have dreams. Slowing down can be the best medicine!
In closing, I wish you the best this holiday season and much success and satisfaction in 2020. Thank you for making 2019 a great year and remember that New Years starts today!
