Stand Out with Your Resume: Expert Advice from a Recruiter

There are many recommendations, tips, and tricks for creating your resume. As a recruiter, we are constantly viewing and critiquing resumes. When candidates or friends ask me for advice on creating or editing their own resume, here are a few things I share with them:

1. Use Your Resources

When brainstorming all of the tasks you’ve performed in your current role, it can be daunting to put all this info into writing. Consider using the job description for your current or past roles as a resource to pull from and incorporate into your resume. Also, try AI as a writing tool to generate this info clearly (be sure to proofread first).

When applying to a specific job, tailor your resume for the role. Again, use the job description or company website as a tool, pulling keywords, or phrases and implementing them into your resume. Hiring managers will see this and realize you have the exact experience they are looking for.

2. Incorporate Metrics

Everyone loves seeing metrics because they are measurable and factual. Incorporate metrics with phrases such as "exceeded sales target by 20%" or "reduced operating costs by 20%", etc. Note that these metrics will depend upon your position. They are a great way to present real data about your experience while painting a picture of your successes for whoever is reading your resume.

3. Keep It Clear

This might seem obvious, but make sure your resume is organized and makes sense to the reader. At first glance, the reader should get an impression of what industry you are in, and what your top skills are. Consider the story you are trying to tell about yourself and how it aligns with the information in your resume. Leave off details that do not make sense for the role you are applying for. Be sure the dates on your resume are correct (minimize overlap), and always proofread!

While details in every resume will differ person-to-person, these few tips are a quick way to generate a solid resume that should help you stand out from the crowd.
