Here’s a brief analysis and summary of results from Hunter Crown’s Water and Wastewater Industry Jobs Survey. It’s more positive and optimistic than we would have thought and we’re happy to share the results with you. Special thank you to all who participated.
Fifty percent of employed respondents are either considering or actively seeking a change in employer in 2021. Interestingly, the percentage of respondents who are not employed is very close to current unemployment figures (November unemployment rate was 6.9%).
34.6% - Employed and considering making a move to a new company during 2021
15.4% - Employed and actively looking to make a move now
42.3% - Employed and content with staying with my current employer during 2021
7.7% - Not employed
A desire for a steady paycheck was the most important for nearly 60% of respondents.
Opinion concerning current business sentiment and outlook for 2021 was highly divided yet there were no respondents who selected the most bearish perspective!
40% - Cautiously optimistic....2020 was turbulent but the business still performed and 2021 looks pretty good
24% - Bullish....still lots of opportunity and making investments in hiring/expanding
20% - Concerned....sales were done in 2020, looks like more of the same in 2021. No new spending.
16% - Neutral....who saw 2020 coming? No one! Who can say what 2021 will bring and therefore we are positioned to react as necessary.
Interestingly, the percentage of respondents who personally think 2021 will be better than 2020 (65.4%) is almost the same optimistic outlook for business (64%), featured in the preceding question.
68% of respondents feel that water and wastewater is essential and even if there is some drop in pay or opportunities, it is more stable than most industries. While 28% of respondents feel that the industry has its ups and downs just like the market at large.
Over 80% of respondents are “always willing to listen regarding a potential job opportunity” or are “always looking for the next great opportunity”! Approximately 15% of respondents are focused on their current role and not interested in another position or intend to stay with their current employer until retirement.
LinkedIn (89%), Friends and Professional Networks (62%), and Recruiters (54%) are the top channels used when looking for a new job.
96% of respondents are over 40 years old. 32% are over 60 years old. There were 26 participants in total. We hope that in future surveys we can have a much larger sample to get even more insight into the Water and Wastewater Industry.
Thanks again!
