There are some interview formalities that do not seem to be going anywhere. Below are a few timeless tips to help you prepare for your interview. These can be applied to both in-person and virtual interviews.
Be Prompt
When in-person, show up early and dress the part. For virtual interviews, be sure to have the interview platform ready to go (Zoom, Teams, Meets, etc.). Be sure that you AND the room you are in are interview ready; this may mean adjusting the lighting or background.
Come Prepared
Check out the company website to understand their niche and history. Also, know who you’re interviewing with, check out their company bio or LinkedIn profile.
Have Questions
This confirms the step above. During your research, it is natural for questions to arise. This will give the interviewer a chance to explain details they may have missed and will likely spark deeper conversation.
Practice Active Listening
Pay attention to what is being said by the interviewer, and be sure you have clarity on what is being asked. This will assure you formulate a clear and concise answer.
Be Confident but Humble
Know your strengths and express them in a humble manner. Rather than stating you can do the job because you have done it before, discuss the specific benefits you could bring to the company.
Close on a Positive Note
Last impressions are just as important as first ones, and can sometimes outweigh your credentials. Leave off with a smile, and follow up with a note thanking the interviewer for their time.
No matter how many interviews you’ve been on, or what position you are applying for, don’t be afraid to take your preparation back to the basics.
Best of luck with your next interview!
