Recently, I have been recruiting for two different positions that require relocation. Many prospective candidates have turned down speaking with me about these opportunities without knowing more about the location and the role. A lot of the responses are something along the following lines: “I do not have any interest in relocating there.” There’s no why or further inquiry into the location’s pros and cons.
My question is:
Have you taken the time to thoroughly assess whether this would be a good career decision for you?
My husband relocated us overseas a few years back. It wasn’t easy but it has been an amazing opportunity with challenges and experiences I wouldn’t change. Relocating for a job can present several advantages, both professionally and personally.
Here are some reasons why a relocation can be a great thing to do:
Career Advancement: Relocating for a job often means taking on new responsibilities, challenges, and opportunities for career growth. It might involve a higher position, increased responsibilities, or exposure to a different aspect of the business.
Professional Development: Moving to a new location can provide access to a different work culture, industry network, and professional development opportunities.
Financial Benefits: Some relocations come with financial incentives, such as higher salaries, relocation allowances, or cost-of-living adjustments. This can lead to an improved financial situation for the family.
Networking: Relocating to a new area allows individuals to expand their professional and personal network. Building connections in a different region or industry can open up new opportunities for collaboration, partnerships, or future career prospects. Joining new activities, and making new friends is an exposure to diverse perspectives and can contribute to personal growth.
Learning and Adaptability: Moving to a new location challenges individuals to adapt to a different environment, and builds resilience which can enhance our ability to learn, be flexible, and thrive in diverse situations. This adaptability is a valuable skill.
Quality of Life: In some cases, relocating may offer a higher quality of life, whether it's due to a more favorable climate, better amenities, improved work-life balance, or access to recreational activities.
Despite the potential benefits, it's crucial for the family to be on board with the decision.
Here's why:
Family Stability: Relocating can disrupt the stability of family life. It's important to consider the impact on spouses, children, and other family members. For example, a teenager might not be on board with this decision. Open communication and addressing concerns are essential to maintaining family cohesion. Make sure you do this before even considering interviewing for a position that requires relocation.
Support System: Moving away from a familiar support system of friends and family can be challenging. The well-being of the entire family should be taken into account, including emotional and social needs.
Education and Healthcare: Consider the quality of education and healthcare in the new location. If you have children, researching schools and healthcare facilities is crucial to ensure a smooth transition.
Dual-Career Considerations: If both partners have careers, it's important to assess the impact on the spouse's job prospects in the new location.
Lifestyle Preferences: Each family member may have different lifestyle preferences. Do you like living in the suburbs, or more remote, or is your family a city enthusiast? Understanding and aligning these preferences with the relocation decision can contribute to a more positive experience.
In summary, while relocation can offer numerous opportunities, it's essential to weigh the potential benefits against the impact on family life. Open communication, thorough research, and considering the well-being of all family members are key factors in making a well-informed decision. However, if you ask me, I am going to say GO FOR IT!
