Celebrating Innovation and Science Every Day

As part of my work routine, I check my LinkedIn’s feed every morning. One day, my feed showed me the following:

  1. A post of a blue beer made with algae

  2. The world’s biggest shear leg crane carrying an entire vessel

  3. An experiment with a digestate remediated by algae

  4. A hydraulic software that can help us efficiently design the water supply scheme and more.

But why am I telling you this?

Most of the time on social media, we just scroll down to the next post and don't take breaks to really think about what we just saw. The posts I mentioned here are talking about some of the many breakthrough discoveries that are changing the world, or at least making great contributions. I sometimes forget that platforms like LinkedIn can remind us how important it is to keep innovating and trying new things and how science makes our lives better.

These posts remind me to stop being “too busy” and take a moment to reflect.

UNESCO defines science as “the greatest collective endeavor” that “contributes to ensuring a longer and healthier life, monitors our health, provides medicine to cure our diseases, alleviates aches and pains, helps us to provide water for our basic needs – including our food, provides energy, and makes life more fun, including sports, music, entertainment and the latest communication technology. Last but not least, it nourishes our spirit.” I couldn’t agree more with this explanation of how science affects our lives!

With this in mind, I wanted to point out that the National Science Day is celebrated on February 28th, where we can intentionally spend time to celebrate our past, current, and future generations doing great things through science.

But we don't have to wait till this date to celebrate science and the work scientists do. We should celebrate it every day because it is essential to highlight the role of science in the protection of the environment, water, life, and the advancement of discovery.

What is one way that science has significantly impacted your life? We’d love to hear your thoughts.
