When Working Remotely Is Across the World

Before joining Hunter Crown’s team and moving 3,879 miles away from home, I had the opportunity and pleasure to have met the CEO and owner of the company, Austin Meyermann. While my relationship with him was not on a business level, I knew he was a team player, honest, smart, dedicated, hard working man and most importantly he loved his job. Little did I know that later on I was going to work with him across the ocean, having a 6+ hour time difference. Thank you, Austin, for giving me this opportunity!

Working remotely has definitely been challenging, not to mention that this is my first job since graduating college. Some people might say I have had beginner's luck, which maybe I have. However, not being able to communicate immediately when a situation arises across the ocean is hard, and having to wait hours until someone responds is sometimes torture. I cannot wake up my colleagues when they are sleeping; ultimately it is not a death or life situation (even though it feels like that). I don’t know if I will ever experience working in an office and meeting colleagues face to face every day, but I am thankful for today’s technology that allows me to join video calls in a split-second.

Working remotely has taught me invaluable things such as:

  • Patience and trust. This has proven to me that you can rely on your coworkers when you need them, even though it is not in that instant.

  • Team collaboration. We support each other, provide help and feedback to achieve goals.

  • Flexibility. While I am not on the same schedule as the rest of my team, the communication between us is still effective and efficient with a more flexible workflow.

  • Consideration. Being aware of my team's needs and preferences is important in order to have good interactions.

  • Communication. Being honest and polite always, no excuses. We can all have bad days but that does not mean it should reflect on how we treat each other.

This small but powerful team supports each other across continents and time zones, my teammates are amazing and I hope one day I get to meet them all in person. Hunter Crown’s Team cherishes and celebrates individual and team achievements, because we all are important and their success is also my success. I am lucky to have such a phenomenal team across the globe.
