As a regular swimmer, I was very concerned when I found out that the Seine River was barely meeting the standards for open swimming during the Olympics. To be completely honest, every swimmer inevitably ingests some water while swimming. Therefore, when there are concerns about the water quality being barely "good" enough, it suggests that the effort to clean it should have been greater.
I feel confident speaking about this topic because I have been in other European cities where it rains a lot, yet you can swim in the harbor year-round. While those cities may not be as large as Paris, the efforts and technology exist to clean polluted waters and make them safe. Of course, there will be challenges but, in my opinion, it could have been done.
Open water swimming is a unique and invigorating experience that offers swimmers the chance to connect with nature while enjoying a full-body workout. However, the quality of the water in which we swim is of paramount importance for our health, enjoyment, and environment.
Here are some key reasons why clean water is essential for open-water swimming:
Health and Safety: Swimming in contaminated water can expose swimmers to harmful bacteria, viruses, and pollutants that can lead to various illnesses, such as gastrointestinal infections, skin rashes, and respiratory issues. Clean water helps ensure that swimmers remain healthy and safe during their activities.
Enhanced Performance: Clean water provides a more pleasant swimming experience, free from debris and pollutants that can hinder a swimmer's performance. Clear water allows for better visibility, which is crucial for navigation and avoiding obstacles in open water.
Environmental Impact: Maintaining clean water bodies is essential for preserving aquatic ecosystems. Pollution can harm marine life, disrupt ecosystems, and lead to the degradation of natural habitats.
Aesthetic Appeal: Swimming in pristine, clear water is far more enjoyable and inspiring than navigating murky, polluted waters. The beauty of clean water bodies enhances the overall experience of open-water swimming, making it more appealing to both seasoned swimmers and newcomers.
Community and Recreation: Clean water is crucial for fostering a sense of community among open-water swimmers. It encourages more people to participate in the sport, promotes local tourism, and supports recreational activities that benefit the economy.
In conclusion, clean water is fundamental for the health, performance, and enjoyment of open-water swimmers. It also plays a critical role in environmental conservation and community well-being. As swimmers and individuals who work in the water industry, we cannot stress enough the importance of advocating for and supporting initiatives that aim to keep our water bodies clean and safe for all.
