Take the First Step

Uncertainty in the world can make us rethink opportunities and cozy up in our comfort zone.

But, when you have thoughts like: “Am I happy at work? Do I feel like I make a difference? Do I care? Does it pay well? Is it worth my time? Am I bored?”....Maybe it’s time to reconsider your current choices and circumstances.

Moving away from the comfort zone can be scary.

Growing up, we learned that trying new things (not necessarily good or bad) can be frustrating and time consuming. For example, when we learn how to walk, we fall many times in the process before we achieve our goal. We try, we fall, we get up, we try again, we fall, get up, try again, and so on. That continues until we start to see progress.

Sometimes we have to go back to step number one, take a break, and try all over again until we are walking smoothly. I am sure that, for a baby, it’s a little scary to start taking big steps at the same time you are tumbling, but at the end, the baby overcomes the challenges, learns how to walk, and discovers a completely new world thanks to this step forward.

Changing jobs and looking for new opportunities are similar to learning how to walk. We are ready to make the move but we are also unsure of the path or the outcome. We do not know if the companies we apply for will ask us to move forward with an interview or not. We think about whether we’re going to move to a second interview or not. Are we going to advance to an offer stage? Will the offer presented be what we want?

This process can be a little bumpy and rocky, with many stops on the way. But isn’t it very rewarding when we get to where we wanted and start exploring new territory?

It’s normal to be afraid but do not let this fear stop you.

On the contrary, use it as fuel to make you move and find new opportunities. Yes, the comfort zone is great but is that happiness? Is that where you want to stay for the rest of your life?
