Something Positive

Towards the end of last week, I sent a text to a colleague and asked, “When was the last time something was written that was positive?” He chuckled and said, “You know, you make a really good point.”

On LinkedIn, wins are celebrated. Triumphant experiences of completed jobs or new hires are shared and supported. But I find that you really have to search for these stories and sometimes that can be deflating.

Every other source of news/information seems to only highlight the negative, and if they do share something positive, it’s almost as though it is drowned out by the opposite. It seems to be what we stick to. Like the Netflix series “Squid Game” we really just seem to dig negative stuff a lot of the time. “Squid Game” is great by the way!

I’m here to share with you something positive.

Something small and simple that brings me joy on a daily basis.

This would be my company office space. Yep, that’s right, our little office in the downtown area where I grew up. It’s a perfect sanctuary for productivity, focus, escape, peace, serenity… I could go on. I find it to be a space where things are just better. The office is almost always the right temperature. It has a great view of the local post office parking lot which I find to be the best people watching spot in the city. The ceilings are high and freshly painted. There is minimal clutter and you can always regulate the noise by opening and closing the windows. There is space for another desk or two but we’ve kept it minimal and simple, I love that. The carpet on the floor is just the right texture and color. We have whiteboards on the walls for tracking progress and facilitating discussions.

I always dreamed of having a place like this in my house, but I have found that the act of transitioning from my home to my office is one that brings me joy. In the office, I can have a singular focus or put my head in the clouds. Sometimes I work here alone and sometimes it's bustling with colleagues and other tenants in the building. I’m particularly appreciative of this space and I consistently call our Principal to let him know how thankful I am for our office. I get the sense that he feels the same way. We share this positive atmosphere and I hope I always have a space in my life that brings me this much joy.

I realize this may be something small and perfectly random, but after sorting through so much that’s wrong, I know my office space is right. A positive place that I wanted to share with you. Hopefully, there is a place in your life that brings you these feelings and if not, I’d recommend finding a space like this -- it’s life changing in more ways than one.
