Qualify Before You Apply

Before applying to a job, you should take the time to qualify yourself for a position and consider if this is a role that aligns with your future goals. If you can fulfill 80-90% of the requirements, you're likely a good fit. Focus on a few key elements to determine this. Here’s what to look for:

1. Job Title and Overview

  • Relevance: Does the title align with your current role or future career goals? If it’s a more senior or specialized position, do you have the necessary experience to back it up? If yes, make sure they’re listed on your resume.

  • Company Overview and Culture: What does the company claim about its culture, mission, and values? Does it sound like a company you’d want to work for?

2. Required Qualifications

  • Skills & Experience: Does the job require qualifications, skills or experience that you possess? If you’re missing a few, are they things you can quickly learn or develop?

  • Education and Certifications: Ensure that your education and certifications align with the listed requirements. If they’re flexible, they might allow for relevant experience to substitute for formal education, so don’t count yourself out until you ask.

3. Desired/Preferred Qualifications

  • Bonus Skills: These may not be dealbreakers, but do you have any of the preferred qualifications listed? This could really help you stand out from other candidates.

  • Emerging Skills: Look for references to industry trends or emerging technologies—this could tell you if the company is forward-thinking and if the role will keep you engaged and up to date with future qualifications.

4. Location and Work Environment

  • Remote or Hybrid: Is the position remote, hybrid, or on-site? Does the location work for your lifestyle or do you have flexibility to relocate if needed?

5. Salary and Benefits

  • Compensation: If mentioned, does the salary range meet your expectations? Also, consider benefits like healthcare, retirement plans, stock options, PTO, bonuses, etc.

Qualify yourself by matching your strengths and career goals to the job description. Look for ways your skills align with the key qualifications and responsibilities, and then tailor your application to highlight how your experience matches the role.
