Nailing Your Interview

Nailing your interview is like assembling a puzzle. You have all the pieces (your skills and experience), but fitting them together to create a complete picture takes time and strategy.

So, what’s the missing piece?

The final piece of the puzzle is effective communication.

In interviews, it’s not just about what you say; it’s how you say it.

Here are three essential tips to help you communicate with clarity and confidence so you can go from "just another candidate" to "the candidate we need."

Step 1: Slow Down

Speaking too quickly can lead to stumbling over your words and using filler phrases like “uh,” “like,” and “you know.” These fillers dilute the impact of your message.

Slowing down your speech helps you appear more confident and allows you time to think through your answers. You’ll also articulate your thoughts more clearly.

Step 2: Pause

Before diving into your answer, take a deep breath. Pausing gives you a moment to collect your thoughts, which can prevent filler words from creeping in. This simple adjustment can be a game-changer, transforming how you communicate.

If you’re asked a tricky question or feel a filler word bubbling up, remember: it’s okay to pause. Silence can be powerful and shows thoughtfulness in your response.

Step 3: Notice Patterns

Becoming mindful of when and why you use fillers is the first step toward eliminating them. Pay attention to situations where you’re most prone to stumbling.

Try recording yourself doing a practice interview. Replaying your responses can reveal patterns you might not have noticed. It may feel awkward at first, but it’s one of the most effective ways to improve your communication.

Remember, communication is the bridge between being “just another candidate” and becoming the candidate. With practice and these simple adjustments, you’ll be well on your way to nailing your next interview. Slow down, pause, and communicate like a pro. You've got this!
