Whenever I choose a mentor I have a relatively narrow window of why I believe they could/would be a good one. This window relates specifically to what this person does the best. Whatever it is that they are the best at, I look up to them because of this skill or trait. In sports, I look up to Tiger Woods, the golfer. In philanthropy, I look up to Bill and Melinda Gates. In leadership, I look up to President Obama. In the creative and media spaces, I look up to YouTubers like Marques Brownlee or Casey Neistat. In work rate, I look up to my wife, she is an absolute powerhouse!
All of the above-mentioned people are masters of something. It could be teaching, maturity, video creation, basketball, golf, etc. It was, and always will be, a goal of mine to be in this category as someone else’s go-to person, someone else’s mentor. I’ve always wanted to be a specialist at something. When I was younger, this was definitely something sports-related like soccer or skateboarding. As I grow older, I often find myself wondering what this would look like today or in the future. What will someone say is my best skill or trait? What will someone seek from me that I will be happy to provide with expertise?
I am working on this now. I don’t want to end up as a master of nothing. This is not my goal. There is nothing wrong with being good at a few things. I simply find specialization more intriguing and more useful than generalization. I truly believe everyone has it in them to be special, to be a master of something.
Today, now, or soon, consider working on becoming that master of something.
In five years, will you regret putting in the time and effort to become that person? There is zero percent chance you will have regret developing yourself.
Are you already this person?
Can you add to your expertise, can you advise more people?
Are you sharing your gifts to the best of your ability?
In those days he was wiser than he is now; he used to frequently take my advice. ~Winston Churchill
