Is Your New Job a Curry?

I had coffee with one of my former employees today.

She is an absolute all star, the kind of employee that every owner wants to hire…..self directed, loyal, ambitious, and just a good human being.

She left my company about a month ago to join a financial services company. More resources, better pay, and a great environment to learn new skills. I totally supported her move. It just made sense and I am proud of her.

As we sat in the cafe, I couldn’t help but feel both inspired and conflicted, but maybe not for the reasons that you might think.

I was inspired by her stories of learning a new culture, navigating a new system, meeting new people, and acquiring new skills.

Variety is the spice of life and this was curry!

Correspondingly, I felt conflicted because, as a business owner, I don’t get to experience this variety. My business performs best as a result of doing the same thing over and over again with incremental improvements in process. Hardly a recipe for passion!

I once heard another business owner say that “he is his business’s wife,” meaning that he does all of the “kin keeping,” nearly invisible activities that keep the business running with little or no recognition. This is the heart of business ownership.

If you own a business, you know what I am talking about. However, if you are an employee, take a minute to truly appreciate the freedom you have to change your reality at any time. Great companies, awesome colleagues, and cool projects are all out there waiting for you to show up and make them a part of your world.

Go find them. The only thing I ask is that you send me a postcard. :)
