Times continue to be weird. I actually physically went to my office today in order to make sure it was still there. Right now, it seems folks are either hyper-focused or completely distracted. I’m not sure there is a middle ground. Business is slow for some and booming for others. One thing is for sure, the number of unknowns heading into the future is mounting quickly.
So, what’s your game plan? Are you embracing the distracting moments? Are you falling behind in the things you want to accomplish? Have the distractions become excuses?
I want to share a short story with you. I was on the phone with a candidate last week and from the beginning of the call to the end, I could tell this person wasn’t present. Ill-prepared answers, car beeps, outside noises, tons of “ums,” and repetitive questions made the conversation feel like a decade. I’m not sure either one of us got something positive out of the call. That being said, I was able to reflect on the level of distractedness and breathe easy because I knew it was part of the times. But does it have to be detrimental?
Distractions can be harmful, like in the instance above, but they can also be beneficial. I frequently use running as my distraction during lunch or before dinner. It is my “necessary distraction” to reset and to replenish my mind. This leaves me more focused and less preoccupied during important tasks throughout the day. I am able to get things accomplished quicker because I’ve harnessed my distractions. Experiment with this as you go forward.
Be distracted sure, but try to be distracted in a positive and productive way.
