Right now, we are being pushed into an even more online-based society.
“Pushed” may be the wrong word, but we are “leaning” more and more on online interactions and transactions to get things accomplished. Some folks will find this reliance on technology cumbersome and stressful. Some will find their stride immediately and cherish the ability to work from home, on a computer, in a comfortable setting.
Think for a second about students. During modern time, for many places on this planet, kids have been shuffled to school to sit in a building and learn. The face-to-face interaction builds relationships, trust, accountability, and someone is usually within arms reach to answer questions. In an online environment, the speed of everything we do is still there, but the academic environment and social constructs are drastically different. Teachers are staring at students through online applications and grading assignments on devices that make them squint and save their work so they don’t lose it. Teachers are also trying to cram lessons into shorter windows in order to accommodate the change in setting. Again, some students will find this preferable compared to the typical brick and mortar schooling they are used to. Others will find this distracting, frustrating, isolating, and harmful.
I ask all of you to think of students and teachers in a time like this. Find a way to thrive in the current working environment. Many students and teachers have no choice. For safety and policy reasons they must use the tools at their disposal and make the best of these challenging times. They will thrive, in one way or another. They will support one another, challenge convention, and make it through.
As a community, we must do the same as our working lives have been altered drastically. Uphold the values that help make you successful and create a culture around you that is infectious, forward-thinking, and useful.
Find A Way To Thrive.
