There are a million different tips and tricks out there to help you win an interview. One that I find underrated is simply expressing interest in the position. Sometimes, I come across candidates who are deep in the interview process who I can't quite read and I have to ask…“Do you even want this job?”
Maybe they fear appearing too eager or that they might be acting too aggressive for a position. But showing genuine interest throughout the interview process will appeal to the hiring manager. Your excitement about the role will have the interviewer imagining you on their team.
Here are a few ways to express interest during an interview:
Research the Position. Know what will be expected of you in the job. You can then explain how you will achieve the company’s goals, and how your experience aligns with the role.
Research the Company. Understand the company and what makes them unique, and how you will be an asset.
Ask questions. You know this one. Asking questions shows that you’ve done the research. It also gives you insight into the hiring manager's mind.
TELL them. Let them know you’re excited about the role and the next steps in the interview process. This will likely help to accelerate the process.
Tailor your resume for the role. Have the job description reflect on your resume; show how your experience matches with the role.
Respond quickly. Accept the calendar invite, respond to the email, and return the call promptly.
Send a thank you letter. This keeps you on the interviewer's mind and lets them know you are still considering the role.
Be genuine but also don’t be afraid to express your excitement during the interview process. Besides, starting a new job IS exciting.
