As a recruiter, I sincerely enjoy helping top talent find their next great opportunity. I hope that a new job brings each candidate exciting challenges, monetary wins, friendships, fulfillment, and helps advance their career. I am of the mindset that we only have one life and that it is important to do work that is productive, satisfying, and that makes you proud.
Having said this, I also want to share about the many situations I have encountered where potential candidates schedule a preliminary interview with me to discuss a role presented in a job description, but when the time of the interview comes, the potential candidate has changed their mind and does not want to interview anymore. The only issue is: they don’t let me know in advance.
I know your time is precious. Mine is too. However, the only way for me to know that you are not interested is for us to communicate. Mutual appreciation of time results in a positive relationship. You never know when our paths will meet again. I do not want to waste your time, but I also do not want to waste mine. Shoot me an email and cancel the interview, no big deal.
I promise I will not get upset if you cancel our interview. I’d rather know that you have changed your mind and that you are not interested in the job. Transparency is key to success.
It brings me joy and happiness knowing that my job is to present great opportunities to top talent and that the result is people landing a position they love. We earn commission, yes, but how long would we last as recruiters if we weren’t finding the right person for the job? It’s rewarding knowing that I have helped place someone in a good spot and that this new role can bring about positive change.
“The saddest summary of a life contains three descriptions: could have, might have, and should have.” -- Louis E. Boone
