In a time when we’re always “on” and connected, achieving a healthy balance between one’s professional and personal lives can be tricky. We’re seeing a shift away from the traditional 9-5, and the options of how work can be performed look a bit different than they did even a few years ago. More and more companies are offering hybrid and remote positions as options, encouraging their employees to fit work into their lives instead of the other way around. Though the flexibility is great, the clear demarcation between being “at work” and being “home” can get fuzzy. However, by considering your priorities, lifestyle, and what stage of life you’re currently enjoying, it can be possible to find a balance that works for you.
Boundaries: Leave work at work. It's important to set boundaries between work and home life and stick to them. This may mean setting specific work hours or turning off alerts for your work email or phone outside of those hours.
Be Present: Focus on one task at a time. Multitasking can lead to an increase in stress and a decrease in productivity. Try making a list of your daily top priorities and focus on what’s most important to accomplish that day, both at work and at home.
Take Breaks: Make sure to take breaks throughout the day, both at work and at home. This can help you recharge and avoid burnout. And don’t forget to take your PTO!
There isn’t a one-size-fits-all solution to this balancing act, and it will vary depending on your individual circumstances. Work-life balance isn’t a one-time accomplishment, it’s an ongoing process. But, with some effort and a willingness to adapt to ever-changing situations, you too can find that balance.
